This work encompasses the collaboration between Mackey Howe and his former classmate Roan Callahan. They work under the pseudonym MOAN, which is a combination of their first names. Together, Mackey and Roan have created a body of images that is rooted conceptually in the work of Carl Jung and his theory of archetypes in humanity’s collective unconscious. Specifically, this work concerns the shadow archetype. The shadow represents the part of ourselves that we do not acknowledge; all the drives and desires we wish we could lock away without feeling. The figures you see in this collection of images are MOAN’s conception of the shadow brought to life. They show what it might be like to encounter the primal part of your mind outside of the body - both nightmarish and sublime.
